Bonnie Schneider
After graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963), but subsequently observing the liberal arts experience as a teacher (Brown University 1971-75), I am a believer in education that incorporates studies in the arts with study of many different subjects. This is not surprising coming from an ethnomusicologist with obtained an MA in 1967 and a Ph.D. from UCLA. My ethnomusicology degree, which I started with UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within the department of music in a College of Letters and Science. It's fun to pursue several interests. I enjoy looking at the larger perspective. It's a pleasure to instruct graduate and undergraduate students. I'm a published writer of 3 books, Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing Cultural Expression and Music. Then I will alternate between periods of primarily academic pursuits and administrative tasks (I was Chair of the Department of Music from 1983 until 1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998 and Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chair of Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and I am now the Chair of Department of Music).
